About Premium Red Dunes Safari
Not all desert is equal. Drive forty-five minutes east of Dubai and the pale, low sand near the city gives way to something else entirely: the big red dunes of the Lahbab Desert, rust-coloured ridges rising thirty metres and more, glowing almost crimson in the late sun thanks to the iron oxide in the sand. Every operator says “red dunes.” This tour is built to actually deliver them — the tallest terrain in the area, an extended drive through it, and a small-group format that lets the landscape, not the logistics, lead the evening.
The Premium Red Dunes Safari is our terrain-first safari. Where our other premium formats upgrade the camp service (VIP Desert Safari Dubai) or the vehicle itself (Hummer Desert Safari), this one upgrades the desert. The dune bashing session runs around 45 minutes — longer than the standard Evening Desert Safari‘s 30–35 — and it’s routed deliberately into the high-dune country that shorter tours only skirt: the big bowls, the long ridge lines, the steep crimson faces that make the Lahbab famous. Vehicles carry fewer guests than standard shared tours, convoys are kept small, and drivers on this route are our senior desert specialists, selected for exactly this terrain.
The evening’s structure will be familiar if you’ve read about our classic safaris, because the classics earn their place: hotel pickup across Dubai, the drive out, then the extended dune session ending on a high crest for sunset — and at this height, with this sand colour, it’s the best sunset vantage of any tour we operate. Sandboarding here means longer, faster runs down bigger slopes. Then the camp: a quieter, more refined venue than our large-capacity sites, with Arabic coffee and dates, a camel ride, henna, costume photos, a BBQ dinner buffet with vegetarian options, and the live programme of Tanoura, fire show, and belly dance.
Who books this tour? Second-time visitors lead the list — people who did a standard safari on a previous trip, loved it, and want the bigger, deeper version. Photographers come for the dune scale and the colour (the iron-red sand at golden hour needs no filter). Small groups of friends and couples pick it as the sweet spot between the standard shared safari and the cost of going fully private. And travellers who research before they book — who’ve learned the difference between the dunes near the city and the real Lahbab country — tend to land here, because this is the page that difference was written for.
Where does it sit against the alternatives? If your priority is camp luxury, the VIP format’s reserved lounge and table service is the better spend. If it’s the machine, the Hummer or the self-drive Can-Am Maverick X3 Dune Buggy. If it’s maximum wheel time with no camp at all, the Dune Bashing Dubai tour. But if your priority is the desert itself — the biggest dunes, the longest drive through them, the best sunset crest, in a small group — this is the booking, full stop. Add a Private Desert Safari upgrade and the whole route bends to your group alone.
Small-group capacity means small inventory. Winter sunset departures on this tour sell out consistently — book it the way you’d book a good restaurant, not a bus ticket.

What to Expect
The terrain difference. You’ll feel it within minutes of leaving the entry point: the dunes grow, the bowls deepen, and the sand turns from orange toward true red. The extended session exists because this country can’t be done justice in half an hour — the best features sit deep in the field.
The driving. Forty-five minutes of sustained, varied dune work: long committed climbs, ridge traverses with the desert falling away on both sides, and descents into bowls that swallow the horizon. Senior drivers, full safety equipment, mandatory seatbelts, and — as always — intensity adjusted to the vehicle. Prone to motion sickness? Claim the front seat early and eat light.
The sunset. Higher crest, redder sand, longer view. We hold this stop generously because it’s the image guests came for; on clear winter evenings you can watch the dune shadows stretch kilometres.
The camp. Smaller and quieter than our large-capacity venues — fewer tables, easier seats at the shows, shorter buffet lines. Not the table-service formality of VIP; think “boutique” against “grand.”
Weather. October to April for the full glory; the red sand photographs best in low winter sun. Summer departures run but shift emphasis to the post-sunset hours. A camp layer is essential November–March.
Photography. This is the tour we recommend to anyone who books for the pictures: dune scale, saturated colour, small convoys that stay out of frame, and drivers who understand “can we stop here?” Tripods welcome.

How Long Does It Really Take?
The Premium Red Dunes Safari lasts 6–7 hours in total. Pickup is between 14:30–15:30, followed by 30–45 minutes of dune bashing, sunset photography, and the desert camp experience with BBQ dinner. You are dropped back at your hotel around 21:30–22:00.
Accessibility
- Wheelchair users: The high-dune terrain makes this our least adaptable route; for desert experiences with adapted arrangements, contact us about camp-focused alternatives instead.
- Strollers: Carried in the vehicle and usable at the camp; the dunes themselves are carry-only territory.
- Infants: Under-3s cannot join the extended dune session — and on this tour that’s most of the afternoon, so families with infants are genuinely better served by the standard Evening Desert Safari or a private booking.
- Seniors: Welcome in good health; the extended session can be driven gently, though guests sensitive to motion should weigh the longer drive honestly.
- Physical requirements: Not suitable during pregnancy or for guests with back, neck, or heart conditions, or recent surgery — the extended high-dune drive is the most demanding passenger experience we run.
Additional Information
- Best time to visit: November to March is this tour at full power — low sun, red sand, cool crests. October and April are excellent shoulders.
- What to wear: Sandy-proof footwear, comfortable clothes, and a proper layer for the post-sunset camp.
- What to bring: Camera (seriously — this is the tour for it), sunglasses, sunscreen, and a securely pocketed phone for the drive.
- Safety: Seatbelts on for every moving minute; on the high crests, stay behind your driver’s line — dune edges are softer than they look. Emirate visitor guidance at Visit Dubai.
- Trip pairings: Guests who love this terrain often add the Fossil Dunes, Camel Race & Salt Lake Tour for the region’s stranger landscapes, or see the dune sea from above on a dawn Hot Air Balloon Tour.
- Compare the range: Every format, budget to premium, is mapped on our Desert Safari Dubai page — including the budget-friendly evening safari at the other end of this spectrum.
