About

Most desert safaris give you thirty minutes of dune bashing as one course in a longer menu. This tour is for the travellers who want the main course twice. Our dedicated Dune Bashing Dubai experience puts the 4×4 drive itself at the centre: an extended session across the red dunes of the Lahbab Desert with a licensed desert driver, longer climbs, steeper descents, and more time on the sand than any of our combined packages offer.

If you’ve never done it, dune bashing is off-road driving over shifting dunes — a sequence of climbs, ridge runs, controlled slides, and sudden drops that feels somewhere between a rollercoaster and a rally stage, except the track is rebuilt by the wind every night. The Lahbab dunes east of Dubai are the classic venue: tall, rust-red, and constantly changing. Our drivers are licensed for desert driving, the Land Cruisers carry roll cages and full safety equipment, and seatbelts stay fastened from the first dune to the last. Within those rules, the intensity is yours to choose — tell your driver “full send” or “take it easy” and the drive adjusts immediately.

The format is deliberately lean. Hotel pickup across Dubai, around 45 minutes out to the desert, a tyre-deflation stop, and then an extended dune session — roughly 45 to 60 minutes of driving, nearly double the time you get on a standard Dubai desert safari. We break the drive with a high-dune photo stop (and at the right time of day, the sunset), throw in sandboarding for anyone who wants to attack the slopes on a board instead of four wheels, and then run you back to the city. No camp, no dinner, no shows — those belong to our Evening Desert Safari, and if you want both the extended drive and the camp evening, we can combine them in one booking.

Who is this for? Adrenaline travellers, obviously — it’s the single most requested tour among guests who’ve done a standard safari before and spent the whole camp dinner wishing they were still on the dunes. It’s also popular with photographers who want maximum time in the landscape, groups of friends, and anyone short on time: at roughly four hours door to door, it fits a morning or afternoon without claiming your evening. Morning departures get firmer sand and empty dunes — the same conditions that make our Morning Desert Safari Dubai so good — while late-afternoon departures end with sunset on the ridge.

Drivers who’d rather hold the wheel themselves should look at our self-drive machines instead: the Can-Am Maverick X3 Dune Buggy Dubai is the most capable thing we put on sand, and the Quad Bike Tour is the accessible classic. Fans of bigger metal can ride the dunes in an H2 on the Hummer Desert Safari. And if your group wants the extended drive with a vehicle entirely to yourselves — including the freedom to pause, repeat a favourite bowl, or chase a specific photo — convert it into a Private Desert Safari.

Simple, fast, and built around the part of the desert everyone remembers. Frequently booked by repeat visitors — which tells you most of what you need to know.

Highlights Dune Bashing Dubai

Full Itinerary

Shown for the afternoon/sunset departure; morning departures run the same sequence from an 8:30 AM pickup.

Start: 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM | Hotel Pickup

Collection from your Dubai hotel or residence in an air-conditioned 4x4.

4:00 PM | Desert Entry Point

Tyres are deflated for sand driving; water and restrooms available. Self-drive add-ons (quad or buggy) run now if booked.

4:20 PM | Extended Dune Bashing — Part One

The first half of the drive: warm-up runs, ridge lines, and the big bowls of the Lahbab dunes.

End: 5:00 PM | High-Dune Break, Photos & Sandboarding

A pause on a high crest for photos and sandboarding runs. On sunset departures, this is golden hour over the Arabian Desert.

End: 5:30 PM | Extended Dune Bashing — Part Two

Back in the vehicle for the second session — typically the wilder half, now that the group has found its appetite.

End: 6:00 PM | Return Journey

Tyres re-inflated and back to the city, with hotel drop-off around 6:45–7:15 PM.

What to Expect

The drive. Expect sustained, dynamic off-road driving: long climbs where the engine works hard, ridge traverses with the desert falling away on both sides, and descents that put your stomach a half-second behind the rest of you. Drivers read the dunes constantly — routes change daily because the dunes do.

Intensity control. This tour attracts thrill-seekers, but every vehicle still drives to its passengers. Mixed group? The driver pitches to the most cautious passenger unless everyone agrees otherwise. Want maximum intensity guaranteed? Book the vehicle privately.

Motion sickness. Be honest with yourself here — this is double the usual drive time. Skip heavy meals beforehand, sit in the front seat if you’re prone to queasiness, and tell the driver early if you need a pause. Breaks are built in, and stopping is always fine.

Fitness and experience. None required as a passenger. Sandboarding is optional and beginner-friendly.

Weather and timing. Morning departures (October–April especially) get the firmest sand and sharpest handling; sunset departures trade a little firmness for the best light of the day. Summer guests should strongly prefer morning slots. Sunglasses are near-essential year-round — fine sand travels.

Photography. The mid-drive break is engineered for it: vehicles posed on crests, untracked bowls below, and on sunset runs, long shadows across the red sand. Your driver knows the angles.

Accessibility

  • Wheelchair users: This tour is built around sustained off-road driving and is not wheelchair accessible. For an adapted desert experience, contact us about camp-focused alternatives.
  • Strollers: Can be stored in the vehicle, but this format is not recommended for families with infants.
  • Infants: Children under 3 cannot join, and we recommend this tour for ages 5 and up given the extended drive time.
  • Seniors: Welcome in good health — but the standard Evening Desert Safari with its shorter, gentler drive is usually the better fit for older travellers.
  • Physical requirements: Not suitable during pregnancy or for guests with back, neck, or heart conditions, recent surgery, or severe motion sickness.

Additional Information

  • Best time to visit: October to April for the best sand and temperatures. Morning slots offer the firmest dunes; sunset slots the best photographs.
  • What to wear: Comfortable clothes you don’t mind sanding, closed shoes, and sunglasses. A cap or scarf helps on windy days.
  • What to bring: Sunscreen, a securely strapped camera or phone, and very little else — loose items become projectiles on the dunes, so travel light.
  • Safety tips: Seatbelts stay on whenever the vehicle is moving, follow your driver’s instructions during stops, and stay behind the crest line when vehicles are running. General visitor guidance is available from Visit Dubai.
  • Booking advice: Afternoon/sunset slots outsell mornings two to one — book those 3–4 days ahead in winter. The complete range of desert options is on our Desert Safari Dubai page.
  • Make a day of it: Morning dune bashers often finish with an afternoon Dubai City Tour or an evening Dhow Cruise Marina.
